Red roofs and a waterfront. The figures stay undetailed — they carry the scale, not the story.
This was painted on the quay in about forty minutes, which is roughly how long the light stays useful there in the afternoon. After that the shadows turn and the subject is a different one.
The roofs carry the only saturated red on the sheet. Everything else was kept low so that red would not have to compete for attention.
