The dark ground went down in one pass. The light in the glass was lifted out of wet paint, not painted in.
A dark background in watercolour has to be laid in a single continuous pass. Stop halfway and the join shows after drying, and it never stops showing.
The highlights on the glass were taken out with a damp brush while the wash was still wet. Light lifted this way has a softer edge than light left as bare paper, which is closer to how glass actually behaves.
