A back, close up. The subject isn't the figure — it's how the red sits on the ochre ground.
The figure is cropped hard so it stops being a person and becomes a shape. What is actually being tested is how far a saturated red can be pushed before it detaches from the ground behind it.
The ochre was laid first and left to dry completely. The red went on top thickly, with a knife rather than a brush, so it would stand on the surface instead of sinking into it.
