In a portrait, the likeness doesn't come from the eye — it comes from the direction of the creases around it.
This sitter has a particular way of holding his head slightly back, and the whole drawing rests on that angle. Get the angle wrong and no amount of accurate detail will make it him.
The contour on the right of the head was drawn twice. The first one was wrong and was not erased: in a study, an erased line takes the information with it. Left beside the correct one, it shows why the correct one is correct.
